Yesterday I stumbled upon this article posted by Amy Poehlers "Smart Girls" Facebook page.

To my surprise, Miss Rumphius was on the list! Yay! I am anazlyzing this list a bit to see what determines an "empowering childrens book". So far:

-Independence

-inspires individuality (Judy Moody)

-encourages young people to break molds and fearlessly be themselves. (Not All Princesses Wear Pink)

-fearless; rebel in all the best ways (Madeline)

-Passionate (about history, etc) (Imogene’s Last Stand)

-embrace their flaws, as characteristics that set us apart- (Stand Tall, Molly Lou Lemon)

-shows girls they can fight (or joust) for whatever they want, no matter what society tells us.(The Princess Knight)

-encourages independence and individuality, it gives children power in a world ruled by adults (Matilda)

- tackling gender, transgender, economic, and race politics in simple and straight-up terms this book will build a strong feminist foundation at any age. (Rad American Woman A-Z)

-encourages young girls to shatter glass ceilings by crashing boy-clubs (Grace For President)
